Natural Disasters

I feel it is very important for our young students to be scientifically literate and compassionate. I am an advisor for a club at my school called the Junior Beta Club. Our club has gotten together to raise and collect money to send to Japan for the families that have been devastated by the earthquake and tsunami. What makes this fundraiser so special to me is that it was the children's idea to raise the money to send to Japan. The Junior Beta Club members have asked the other students in the school not to buy ice cream or cookies, but to instead, give that money for the families in Japan. Some students have given up their cookies or ice cream while others have not, but it is a start in our endeavour.

    Hi Kelly,
    That sounds like a great idea that your students came up with. That is awesome that you are the advisor for the Beta club. That is a great start for students to become aware of charities and volunteer work to get them prepared for Beta club and volunteer work at the high school level.

    Hi Kelly,

    You are off to a great start! Do you have the opportunity to post the results of your fundraising efforts near the location where the ice cream and cookies are sold? I think that sometimes students may not realize how the small combined efforts from a number of people can influence a fairly large change. Amy :)

    Your blog did not just come up with an idea but a plan that was implemented. You and your students should be commended for demonstrating compassion and how to take action on it!
